Lindsey Nelson's Interview

1: Please explain more what you do.

I work with authors to fine tune their writing and polish their manuscripts before they either self publish or seek a publishing house.

2: What is your biggest life lesson?

My biggest life lesson would have to be to seize the day because you never know if the next day will come.

3: What is your biggest achievement?

My biggest achievement is my business and the reality that I have turned my love for books (and of course grammar) into a career where I get to help others achieve their writing goals.

4: What is currently the most challenging part of running your business?

The most challenging part of my business right now is maintaining a fully booked schedule. I usually book six to nine months in advance, which makes it tricky to get new clients, and sometimes authors aren't ready for their scheduled slot, so that certainly throws a wrench in my schedule...but it also allows me to take on new clients in a timely manner!

5: What was the biggest hurdle you had to overcome to get where you are now?

The biggest hurdle for me has probably been balancing having children while trying to build a career and a business. Now that my girls are older and in school, balancing both has gotten a bit easier. My husband is also an entrepreneur, so balancing family and work falls more on my shoulders. I'm able to put work down when the kids come home, while he's just trying to keep his head above water. Finding that work-life balance is hard.

6: What is your favorite book?

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Although I do have many books that I love...

7: If you could have anyone educate you who would it be?

Oooohhh good question. Probably either Amy Einsohn or Carol Fisher Saller, both renowned copy editors.

8: What is your deepest regret?

I don't really have an answer for that. I try not to regret anything!

9: What is your favorite podcast?

Grammar Girl! Although I tend to read the posts rather than listen to the podcasts.

10: How people can get in contact with you?

editor@exactedits.com

11: What is your YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts?

@exactedits on Facebook and @LNeditor on Twitter

12: Who inspires you on social media and why?

Dan Rather is always unearthing the truth out there and inspiring activism through his words.

13: What is your favorite tech tool that you use in the your business?

I hate to say Microsoft Word, because I fight with it A LOT, but it's my primary tool. Although, two things I can't make it through the day without are Merriam-Webster online and Chicago Manual of Style online.

14: How would you help people with disabilities?

In editing, I think assisting with the tools available when needed is important. But also helping writers to make their voices heard in the world is of utmost importance.

15: What is the hardest part of your job that you have to face everyday?

I love my job. Work is my happy place, so there really isn't anything that I face every day that I find too hard. Competing with lots of other editors to gain clientele is certainly challenging, but not something I have to do every day luckily.
