Jim Meade's Interview

1: Please explain more what you do.
I own and operate three non-traditional B&Bs in the mountains of northern Pennsylvania.

I do not schedule routine tasks for myself but I have a full plate planning for operations and upgrades, fulfilling wants of guests, handling maintenance needs and emergencies, and filling in as support for the hard-working women who care for the lodges,

2: What is your biggest life lesson?
Using what I have to get what I need – my favorite suggestion to others when I was a supervisor was “make it happen”

I believe the life I have is a result of my choices and what happens in my life is primarily all up to me.

3: What is your biggest achievement?
I am proud to be a dad of two wonderful children, and I have two wonderful grandchildren
When I left high school I did not go to college, but went into the military, which changed my life and gave me direction.
I ended up with a PhD and had a most satisfying research career as a research biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
After 34 years as a biologist I retired and then opened a rather successful business.
I’ve developed and now provide a peaceful retreat and exciting destination for many nature / outdoors oriented travelers, and provide two full-time jobs and other work for folks.
After 15 seasons of operating B&Bs, I have 25 journals of guests thoughts on why they came here, what they did, what they liked and some of their serious thoughts. I’ve put this experience together in a book, No Cooked Breakfast, where I offer my thoughts for the aspiring B&B innkeeper. The book has real life stories of what I ran into – the things that are not found in a business How To book. I’m proud of the B&B and of the book.
